Day 8. We are in Marble, NC. It has rained ALL day. We left off in Gettysburg where we spent the night. That following day we toured the battlefields.
Annie had always wanted to see Gettysburg so we got ourselves a "tour CD" to play in the car and took a long drive to check out all the different spots. Our last stop was Little Round Top (second pic below). I (Josh) had been atop there quite often while in college so it was a cool experience to show Annie as well. It's pretty unique geographically and historically.
From there, things got less cool. The drive was boring as all heck (no offense Virginia). We just had a decent distance to get to our next destination and it was all basic highway. Lexington, VA was set to the GPS and when we arrived it was very hot and muggy. We added to the "hot" with a real legit hot dog dinner (still can't find that Howards sweet pepper relish, damn) with a side of couscous. That sounds like a little bit of an odd combo but it worked very well. The next morning we stopped at the local zoo to feed the giraffes. Something I personally requested. On the way there, though, we saw something we just had to take pictures of:
Soooo, after we saw that...we found our way to those giraffes...Some of the llamas got kinda pissed at us cause we didn't have any food left for them.
After the feeding frenzy, we continued on our way to Blountville, TN. It was a relatively quick drive from Lexington. The temperature went down to around 70 which made the setting-up portion of the camping less sweaty. It was the first night that we were going to use our SUV tent, and guess what, it rained. A LOT. After we made dinner, it essentially poured from then until about 15 minutes ago...The night in Blountville was tolerable as we stayed dry, thankfully.
The next morning was a bit of a pain as the "break-down" process was sloppy. After a stop at Perkins for some breakfast this morning to warm us up, we found our way to Marble, NC. Our cabin is next to a river today, so hopefully falling asleep tonight will be easy, as our day being perpetually soaked has given us droopy eyes. Driving all day in the rain was pretty lame, but the winding way through the Smokey Mountains to get here was a great sight. Unfortunately our camera's memory card was full so we weren't able to take any pics. A town called Nantahala which was seated right along it's river system was, seemingly, all about rafting. Some small bbq and burger joints lined the route as numerous rafting and kayaking trips, rentals, guides, etc. filled out the rest of the journey along the Nantahala river. Great drive.
Our camera has been cleaned out and we are now planning out the rest of our day today and tomorrow. It's very possible we might stay here another night tomorrow to give us a chance to dry out our tent and other stuff that got wet in the rain. We'll see....until then, here is Henry's basic day in the car....
