April 19th 2012

Day 9.  Just a quick day today.  We decided to not stay another night in Marble, NC but continue a little further along to Birmingham, AL.  We called a few state parks today to try and see if we could sneak to a tent site, but had no such luck.  So instead, we are treating ourselves to a bed at a hotel and are going to rest-up for the drive to Toomsuba, MS tomorrow.  We knew going into the trip that Alabama was going to be a tough state to stay in, for there were no KOAs that had any sites available for us (I guess they were new and only had RV spots) and we also couldn't for the life of us get a hold of anyone at a state park, even today.  So alas...We packed up our place along the river (below) and moved on.  The river alongside our site last night was very fast moving and wasn't very inviting for swimming, but it certainly helped us fall asleep a little faster by it's (white) noise.
The drive from Marble to Birmingham was relatively mundane, except for the first half-hour or so.  We still had a portion of the southern Smokey Mountains and South Appalachian to get through.  The Cherokee National Forest region is split into two sections (northern and southern).  Today we drove through the southern section.

Tomorrow it's on to Mississippi.  From there we are going to start to navigate and map-out the next week or so after that. The tentative plan is to swing up towards Arkansas and then across through Oklahoma and Texas.  One thing I know we will be searching for in the meantime though is some good BBQ...
